Children’s books from Galicia

Galician society is certainly experiencing times of change because it knows that to avoid losing out on the future, it has to be alive and in movement. However, it is also aware that it should not forget about the past while being committed to what has still to come. We are frantically immersed in the digital revolution, the era of new communication technologies and the creation of new audiovisual media. Our region is also involved, researching and innovating new culture formats. We are decisively committed to them but without forgetting a common, centuries-old, but not outdated, territory. Books, the grand meeting place for peoples and countries, combining individual feelings and collective needs.

It goes without saying that reading is important, especially during the time our personality is formed. It is also clear that, in today’s society, reading habits are declining year after year. However, a good child reader will always become an adult reader. That is why it is essential to encourage early reading and children’s reading. Stories, characters, the excitement of our first experiences in the world of fiction form part of our heritage and our evolution. The world of children’s literature (publishing companies, writers, illustrators…) is therefore one of our priorities.

Within the Galician publishing scene, the sector of children’s literature has shown that is has its own, consolidated personality, being widely renowned in the form of awards and versions in other languages. Our writers, illustrators and publishing companies are becoming more and more acclaimed beyond our reader market. As an industry and a project of cultural affirmation, they will play a significant role in the following years. We are all travelling in the same direction, as shown by this catalogue, which takes an annual look at our literature’s progress, something we are proud to publicise. Because it is the result of a lot of hard work and a job well done, which has now reached maturity. Because it is a commitment to the future. A future that is also and mainly written in books for new readers. Every day of the year and on every page. With the same writing used to write dreams. With the graphic writing of the imagination.

This catalogue presents the children's books that were published in the Galician language during 2005, until the time of going to press.

In relation to the books published in 2005, here we include those that were released alter the publication of last year’s catalogue and reprints that were published in that year. We have included all the books that were published before going to press with this catalogue, which is aimed at international publishing companies and associations with a view to promoting Galician-language children’s literature. The reprints of 2005 will be presented in next year’s catalogue, since we would only be able to include some of them due to the fact that this year’s complete production is not yet available in book shops.

The catalogue has the following structure: 1) production according to publishing company; 2) the books that each company has published accompanied by a brief description of the content; 3) contact of writers and, in the case of those that have published more than four books in their professional career, (4) the last five titles of their production. Strict alphabetical order is followed in all cases. Finally, there is 5) a list of organisms, institutions and associations working to promote reading; and 6) a list of the publishing companies included in this catalogue along with their addresses.

We endeavour to provide a day-to-day vision of Galician-language production in order to highlight the increase or decrease in books, authors and illustrators making up Galicia’s children’s literary system. We have the objective of informing all the organisms, institutions, publishing companies, associations and persons interested in this literature how literature is being created in Galicia, what is being offered to children and youth and how reading is being promoted. A presentation of literature that, like other kinds in the world, reflects different lives and cultures so that such knowledge will promote peaceful coexistence and solidarity in our societies.
