The Xunta de Galicia's Department of Culture, Social Communication and Tourism, by means of its Directorate General of Cultural Promotion, assumes as one of its main functions the promotion of children's literature in order to educate readers from a young age. To that end, it carries out a series of specific measures and programmes every year.

Reading Promotion Campaigns, aimed at libraries, facilitate the participation of boys and girls from all over Galicia in numerous activities; in 2005, we worked to open "A Window on the Imagination" in harmony with the campaign slogan. Apart from a collection of books, each library receives a variety of promotional materials (book markers, stickers, pins, etc) in order to attract young ones. The children participate in different competitions, which reward their creative abilities. They also have the opportunity to become acquainted with authors and illustrators during meetings held in the libraries.

Every April 2nd, the Department enthusiastically participates in International Children's Book Day, providing Galician booksellers with free books to give to the children visiting their establishments.

It also works closely with the different local councils that periodically organise Children's Book Fairs in order to present the latest publications.

Finally, in relation to the Department's publishing activities, children's books have their own, privileged space. The "Lagarto pintado" collection publishes books to accompany the different reading-promotion campaigns, while the "Andel" collection includes information about the world of books and communication for children.
